ABDC welcomes the news that accountants will remain on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) 2014. In particular, we are pleased to see the introduction of a flexible ceiling on migration numbers of accountants to meet changing market demand (as opposed to reviewing accountants as an independent skilled migration occupation on an annual basis). This change reflects ABDC's recommendation to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to adopt a more flexible longer-term approach to reviewing skilled occupations for independent migration purposes.
This welcome change will lead to greater certainty in: 1) meeting projected labour market needs for accountants; 2) growing a more sustainable international education market and pipeline for future accountants; and 3) minimising the associated negative flow-on effect on SME productivity, university planning and funding.
